Canopy: Nonprofit Association
Kentucky is facing significant social problems. We rank in the lowest 10% among states in public health, educational attainment, and economic opportunity. These problems are partially addressed by government programs and non-profit organizations. Their resources can only go so far. Businesses have to fill the gap. But, if we are honest, many of the problems have been created or made worse by irresponsible business. So, we don’t need just any business. We need businesses that are ethical, transparent, and contribute to the greater good. We need businesses that acknowledge that profit and positive impact are not at odds, but are complementary.
Scott Koloms owns Facilities Management Services. They are a contract janitorial service company in Louisville with a social mission. Their mission is to provide opportunities for their front line workers. Simple. They pursued B Corp Certification as a part of their mission. As part of the process, Scott came up with a new strategy, where Kentucky businesses solve Kentucky problems. He started the Kentucky Public Benefit Corporation Association. He asked us if we would help launch the association. We worked a small group of dedicated volunteers to rename the organization, clarify language, provide a dynamic visual identity, launch a website, and build collateral materials to explain the Canopy concept. Canopy is on a mission to make Kentucky first in good business. And we are excited to help.
