Central Christian Church: Disciples of Christ Congregation
Central Christian Church was established over two centuries ago. It was one of the founding churches of the Disciples of Christ denomination, a uniquely American strain of Christianity with a progressive point of view. It was one of the first churches in the city of Lexington, Kentucky. And it has had a deep impact on the cultural fabric of the city ever since. Central Christian Church believes that worship is nothing without service. They prize volunteer work just as much going to Sunday mass. In many ways, the church is an incubator for nonprofits and community organizations. Many of their original initiatives have become change agents in the city in their own right. Despite their contemporary, action-oriented sensibility, Central’s congregation numbers were flagging. Their profile in the city was waning. And they were not confident in their ability to push forward for another 200 years.
We got to know the congregation intimately. Among other efforts, each member of our branding team attended multiple services. We volunteered. And we discovered some incredible people at the heart of an extraordinary place. Inspired by their unique Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and compelling stories, we created an identity to capture their balance of history and forward thinking. The identity is simple and sincere. It speaks to the experience at the heart of all the good work at Central Christian Church.
